Explosive Emulsifier

After years of research in emulsion technology based on experience in associated markets, I.C.C have been able to establish itself as a new and quality supplier of emulsifiers to the explosives sector.

I.C.C has developed a new range of high performance emulsifiers for bulk explosive emulsions and packaged explosives. These new products provide consistently reliable emulsions with key benefits such as long-term stability against thermal and mechanical stress and constant cap sensitivity.

I.C.C can provide emulsion customers with maximum flexibility. Our EMO emulsifiers are specifically manufactured for use in explosives. We use a flexible manufacturing process that allows us to tailor-make products to meet our individual customer’s specifications. Because our emulsifiers are derived from high-reactive thermal process, our customers consistently see lower dosage rates, superior emulsion stability, longer sleep times, better water resistance and greater shear stability. These same characteristics also apply to our newer, greener products.

BULK EMULSION EXPLOSIVES

Modern bulk emulsion systems require careful attention to detail from start to finish. Raw material selection and formulation are utmost importance. The selection and design of production and handling equipment is equal importance. The success of bulk emulsion systems are reliant upon every choice that is made beginning with selection of raw materials and ending only upon the completion of a successful detonation achieving the expected blasting results.


Properties

Emulsion viscosity can change significantly during storage. This factor may be important when selecting an emulsifier. I.C.C Technicians can recommend an emulsifier to enable production of emulsions which stay within an acceptable viscosity range. The stability of chemically gassed emulsions is a critical factor in allowing flexibility of blasting schedules. EMO grade emulsifier give excellent stability against crystallisation during long ‘sleep time’ in the blast holes. The water resistance of emulsions is critical to ensure reliable detonation and minimisation of NOX emissions. EMO grade emulsifiers can be used to achieve optimum water resistance and optimum performance in wet conditions.

EMO grade is a ideal emulsifier in bulk explosives, particularly when a rapid gassing rate is required. These emulsifier allow emulsion to be produced under relatively low shear conditions. 

Storage and Handling

EMO30 is dispatched in polyethylene or corrugated steel, galvanized or carbon steel drums. EMO grade is packed in 220 lit drums, each 4 drums strapped on a pallet or 1000 IBC tank (Intermediate Bulk Container), pallet tank.

Shelf life: EMO grade emulsifier is Stable for years in storage from the date of manufacture when store in the original sealed containers in a cool and dry place. this helps customers with inventory control and shipping.

Safety

Distributed bulk emulsion systems require care and attention from all personnel involved in manufacturing, logistics, distribution and blasting. These bulk emulsions remain as fluid systems throughout their useful life (as opposed to waxed packaged emulsions). Factors such as multiple re-pump events (as the emulsion cools), ambient temperatures (winter and summer), long transport distances, storage conditions, duration of storage, equipment conditions, etc., will have a direct effect on the emulsion products. All systems must be designed around the product in order to ensure that a high quality product reaches the customer and performs as it was designed.

Quality in the manufacturing environment relies on the factors previously discussed in this document. An additional requirement is that the emulsion should be routinely tested by plant personnel as well as automated testing equipment. Emulsion density and viscosity are quick, simple and inexpensive tests that should be performed manually by operations personnel. In our experience, it is common for these parameters to be monitored in real-time by automated sensors while also being verified manually in 15 – 30 minute intervals. Emulsions are inherently safe explosives but remain explosives and must be treated in that manner.

Precautions for safe handling

Hand protection Chemical resistant protective gloves consult with glove manufacturer for testing data.

Eye protection Safety glasses with side-shields.

Body protection Body protection must be chosen based on level of activity and exposure.

General safety and hygiene measures Wear protective clothing as necessary to minimize contact. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. Remove contaminated clothing.

Health Effects

Ingestion: Rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting. lmmediate medical attention required.

Skin Contact: wash thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.

Eye Contact: Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open. Seek medical attention.

Conditions for safe storage

Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place.
